In conversation with: Peter Matthies

This month, we caught up with Peter Matthies, who will be leading the first of our Conscious Leadership Series from the 22nd to the 24th September. Peter is a former Venture Capitalist and founder of the Conscious Business Institute (CBI) in California, which combines everything he learned in the business world with teachings from Native American and South American shamanic traditions, intuitives and psychics. CBI’s principles and programs have been applied in leading organizations including Starbucks, BMW Group, Siemens, Alllianz, Intel, Twitter, and others. Peter is the author of 2 books and over 100 articles on business, finance, leadership, martial arts, and technology.

What do you think are the main challenges that leaders face today?
To summarize in one sentence: Leaders at all levels are confronted with a completely new world order. Essentially, we’re all holding on, trying to make it work. On a day-to-day basis, this translates into enormous uncertainty, overload, and pressure. Most people are working away every day, but below the surface there’s an enormous yearning to find a better, more fulfilling and sustainable way to deal with the daily pressure, volatility and demands of work and life.

What inspired you to move away from traditional paradigms of leadership and set up the Conscious Business Institute?
As a Venture Capitalist I noticed that most companies are run in a very inefficient way and most people are disengaged, wondering whether there’s a better way to work and live. I was one of those individuals. When I was introduced to companies like Patagonia or South West Airlines, I became truly inspired: people loved working there, they made a difference in the world, and on top of that these companies were much more profitable than most traditional ones. So in 2003, I quit my job, moved to California, and decided to develop a different paradigm for business. The name “Conscious Business Institute” came to me in 2004 while I was dozing on a plane. It struck me like a lightning bold. Over the years, I have realized that whatever change we’re seeking in our lives or workplaces, it ultimately comes down to becoming more conscious.

How do you see Conscious Leadership evolving over the coming ten years and do you think it will increasingly become the norm at a political and organizational level?
That would be truly transformative! I am not sure whether we’re quite ready yet for Conscious Leadership on a grand scale within ten years. Many of our institutions are run by individuals who still think in traditional ways. But I am seeing a seismic shift in our world towards more consciousness: 80% of millennials prefer working with a purpose to working for money. We’re also eating more consciously and becoming more conscious about sustainability issues. For me, the question is more about whether it would it be worthwhile for one individual, such as yourself, to become more conscious. And that’s a clear yes, because as you expand your consciousness, your life will open up to completely new possibilities – in all areas: your relationships, your success, or your own well-being. That in turn translates into how you relate to others, lead a business, or vote for a political party.

How can we bring lessons from the leadership conversation into our own lives and relationships?
We are all leaders, whether by default or by choice. In any area where you feel frustration or dissatisfaction, you’re not a leader anymore; you’re not in the driver’s seat. So, if we want to live our potential – live a life of fulfillment, purpose, and happiness – we need to take a leadership role in every aspect of our life. Business is just one playground in our lives. If we show up as leaders in our lives, we’ll also show up as a leader in business. So, Conscious Leadership surely shows up in the board room, but it really begins with how we lead ourselves, and how we relate to the people around us.

Can you describe in a few sentences what participants can expect from the Conscious Leadership Series? In the first instance, this retreat is not about business. It’s about providing a pathway for professionals to access a completely new level of purpose, fulfillment, happiness, and success. To provide a space where you get a glimpse of who you are here to BE during this lifetime – your soul. And then, to align with others how that can be expressed in your work and life – at whatever position you are. From that higher space, you’ll get very concrete suggestions and tools on how to practice conscious leadership in the work world. In some ways I would say that the retreat is for “professionals with an itch”: for people at any level in the workplace who want to create a more fulfilling, purpose-driven way to work and live, and who want to get concrete approaches for becoming conscious leaders in the world.
